ANNUAL AGAPE HEARTLIGHT EVENT TO FEATURE BRYAN STEVENSON, AUTHOR OF JUST MERCY AND BRYAN FIKKERT, AUTHOR OF WHEN HELPING HURTS

Sharp, Robbins & Popwell to Serve as Presenting Sponsor

On Friday, March 2, 2018, Agape Child & Family Services will hold its annual HeartLight event. The event, themed HeartLight: Do Justice, will be held at Hope Church (8500 Walnut Grove Rd.) and will feature Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy and Brian Fikkert, author of When Helping Hurts.

For the first time in the history of HeartLight, general contracting company Sharp, Robbins & Popwell, LLC will serve as the event’s presenting sponsor.

“We’re honored to be able to support this event because it will allow us to further explore justice, mercy and healing for those in our community,” says Dale Sharp, president of Sharp, Robbins & Popwell. “Among our corporate values are integrity, safety, education, and the importance of family. Those values align nicely with this event, and with the work Agape does in support of children and families in Memphis all year round.”

During the event, the speakers plan to discuss where Memphis has been, where we are and where we need to go from here.

Bryan Stevenson is an American lawyer, social justice activist, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, and a clinical professor at New York University School of Law. Based in Montgomery, Alabama, Stevenson has challenged bias against the poor and minorities in the criminal justice system, especially children. He has helped achieve court decisions that prohibit sentencing children under 18 to death, or to life imprisonment without parole. Stevenson has assisted in cases that have saved dozens of prisoners from the death penalty, advocated for poor people, and developed community-based reform litigation aimed at improving the administration of criminal justice. He is also the author of the acclaimed book, Just Mercy.

Dr. Brian Fikkert is a Professor of Economics and Community Development and the Founder and President of the Chalmers Center for Economic Development at Covenant College. He is coauthor of the best-selling book When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor...and Yourself as well as Helping Without Hurting in Short-Term Missions, Helping Without Hurting in Church Benevolence, and From Dependence to Dignity: How to Alleviate Poverty Through Church-Centered Microfinance. Dr. Fikkert earned a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University, specializing in international economics and economic development. He is the author of numerous articles in both academic and popular journals. Prior to coming to Covenant College, he was a professor at the University of Maryland—College Park and a research fellow at the Center for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector.

HeartLight tickets are now on sale for $15, $20 and $30 at agapemeanslove.org/heartlight/. The event starts at 7:00 pm on Friday, March 2, 2018 (doors open at 6:00 pm).
