The nonprofit sector is experiencing a racial leadership gap. This workshop will examine the causes of this disparity, presenting the results of the Race to Lead survey of over 4,000 nonprofit staffers that found people of color had the same education and training as white respondents; however, the majority of respondents across race identified systemic barriers and biases preventing people of color from advancing into leadership roles. This workshop will also present a framework for how to think about organizational change, and explain how participants in the metro-Memphis region can support this ongoing body of research moving forward.

Building Movement Project (BMP)
Frances Kunreuther and Sean Thomas-Breitfeld co-direct the Building Movement Project (BMP), a national organization developing research and resources to support – and push – nonprofit organizations to be laboratories for progressive social change.
Frances founded BMP nearly two decades ago after five years as a senior fellow at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University and her previous work with LGBTQ youth, families experiencing homelessness, undocumented immigrants, crime victims, battered women, and substance users. She is co-author of Working Across Generations: Defining the Future of Nonprofit Leadership and From the Ground Up: Grassroots Organizations Making Social Change.
Sean joined BMP as Co-Director in 2013 after a decade working in various roles at the Center for Community Change where he developed training programs for grassroots leaders, coordinated online and grassroots advocacy efforts, and lobbied on a range of issues, including immigration reform, transportation equity and anti-poverty programs.
